Our Story
One way we express our appreciation to the families we serve is by sharing our history. We are now the last family owned funeral home in existence in Seminole. We designed our website to provide helpful information and guidance, allowing families to make future and final arrangements with greater ease and confidence.
A little bit about us..
Our family’s roots in Seminole and the surrounding communities date back to 1863. The foundation of this legacy began with my great-grandparents, Jesse and Marjorie Johnson, who played an instrumental role in the early development of Seminole. Although Seminole was officially incorporated as a city in 1970, my great-grandfather, Jesse W. Johnson, was a visionary leader long before that time. His contributions included helping establish many of the community’s foundational institutions, such as its first bank, library, post office, fire services, and numerous businesses and developments that helped shape Seminole into what it is today.
In recognition of his leadership and service, he was named Seminole’s first Honorary Mayor in 1970 and was also the inaugural recipient of the “Mr. Seminole” Award in 1965—an honor that continues to recognize individuals who make outstanding contributions to the community. This tradition of service has continued in our family, with my grandfather, Eugene Mohney, receiving the award in 1996, and my father, William R. Miller, in 2017.
Our funeral home traces its origins to the 1950s, when Lewis W. Mohn Funeral Home was founded by Lewis and Martha Mohn. The original location was situated just down the road from our current facility, which was built in 1972.
At the age of 17, my father relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he began working part-time at the funeral home while also volunteering with the Gandy Fire Control District. His dedication led to leadership roles as Board Chairman and President. He also participated in the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Explorer Program, later serving as a radio maintenance specialist.
In 1979, he officially joined Lewis W. Mohn Funeral Home and soon committed to pursuing his calling in funeral service. He attended Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta, where he earned his degree with honors and became a member of Pi Sigma Eta National Morticians Fraternity. During this time, he also met his wife, Sarah Mohney. Upon returning to Florida as a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, he devoted more than four decades to serving families with compassion and care.
In 2015, after 45 years of dedicated service, my father fulfilled his lifelong dream of purchasing the funeral home, ensuring that it would remain one of the few family-owned funeral homes in Pinellas County.
Today, we are proud to continue that legacy, having served the Seminole community for over 67 years. In 2020, we were honored to be recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Seminole during the city’s 50th Anniversary celebration.
Our commitment to the community is reflected not only in the services we provide but also in preserving its history. Within our facility, our “Memory Lane” tribute wall showcases historic photographs of Seminole, many of which are also featured by the Seminole Historical Society. These images capture the growth, achievements, and enduring spirit of our community.
Growing up in the funeral home, my brother and I were inspired by our father’s dedication to serving others. His compassion and commitment to helping families during life’s most difficult moments left a lasting impression on us. It has always been my goal to carry forward that same level of care and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the families we serve.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in our family. It is truly an honor to serve you and the Seminole community.
— James K. Miller
