Obituary

Richard "Rick" John Stegbauer, Sr., 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy defined by devotion, laughter, and the simple joys of life well lived.

Rick was a loving and devoted husband to Meg Stegbauer, with whom he shared a remarkable marriage built on love, partnership, and unwavering commitment. On April 3, 2026, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary—a milestone that reflected a lifetime of memories, resilience, and deep devotion to one another. Fittingly and poignantly, it was on that very same day that Rick passed, forever tying a day of celebration to a day of remembrance.

Rick grew up in Farmington, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. He was preceded in death by his mother and father Fred and Frances Stegbauer, brothers Dave and Jimmy Stegbauer, and sister Sheila Lord.

Before moving to Florida, he served in the Air National Guard. Rick and Meg moved to the Seminole, FL area from Detroit, Michigan in 1975.

He was a proud father to his three children: Richard Stegbauer, Jr. (Tara Stegbauer), Keith Stegbauer (Sidney Stegbauer), and Ashley Layfield (TJ Layfield). Nothing brought him greater pride than his role as "Granddad" to his cherished eight grandchildren: Ricky, Easton, Kylie, Mackenzie, Cloud, Henri, Aurora and Amelia. Each of them held a special place in his heart, along with his many nieces and nephews he had an impact on and loving relationships with over the years.

Rick found his greatest happiness in the moments spent with family. He had daily morning phone calls from his son Keith, and frequent visits at home from all three of his children, even late night post-baseball game visits from son Rick. He was also incredibly proud of his daughter, Ashley, often listening daily as she shared her voice on the radio. His children are as devoted to him as he was to them.

Rick spent 34 successful years as a District Sales Manager with Nilfisk traveling the southeast and Puerto Rico, not only building many lifelong friendships with colleagues, but becoming a mentor to many.

He cherished traditions and lifelong friendships, especially the annual boat trips to Michigan with his high school buddies—trips filled with laughter, stories, and enduring camaraderie. Living in Florida, he embraced time on the water, where boating became another favorite pastime. At home, Rick could often be found in his garage, happily tinkering away on his beloved Triumph TR6. In his 40s, he even took to the skies, pursuing flying lessons—just one example of his adventurous spirit and willingness to try something new.

Rick will be remembered for his steady presence, his love for his family, and the way he found joy in life's meaningful moments that can be seen in so many photographs. His faith carried him through life's many trials. He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Largo, FL. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the traditions continued, and the deep love carried forward by all who knew him. He is so deeply missed.
