Richard pierre Mahany, died Feb. 28 at home
after a long illness. Born
to Lois and Harold
Robert Mahany, in
Tulsa, OK, Sept. 26,
1933, he grew up in St.
Joseph, MI. He is a
graduate of the
University of Michigan with majors in
both history and exercise physiology. He
served in the U.S. Navy.
His survivors are his wife: Margaret
Ellen; children: Kevin Mahany (Tracy),
Kelly Bell (John), Michelle Winter
(Claude); grandchildren: Savannah

During his long career he found his most
fulfillment in his responsibilities as a
manager for the City of Largo
Recreation Dept. for 22 years, retiring in
1995.He served as aquatics supervisor
and competitive swim coach .He was a
father figure ("Pops") to his team and
younger staff members. His own
children, all team swimmers, shared
their summer vacation days with their
father at work.
He used his discipline and intelligence
to develop a beautiful body and a
beautiful mind. He was a runner, weight
lifter and golfer. Over a 12-year period

he earned his Dan First Black Belt
Degree. He enjoyed square dancing and
ball room dancing. His quick Irish wit
and temper challenged us. He won his
arguments and thrived on mental
stimulation.
We are grateful for the care and
friendship of his doctors: Kush Patel,
Ron Lennox Walsh and Lane D. Ziegler.
We are also grateful to Hospice and
Visiting Angels.
