Obituary

"Patrick T.," "Pat," "PJ," "Coach," "Tuber," and "Dad," a man with many nicknames and a great many attributes that make him sorely missed. Patrick Thomas Johnston was born to Evelyn and Thomas Johnston on July 4, 1949, in Pittsburgh, PA. He shared his childhood with his older sister, Sandy, and younger brother Mike. Pat had a lifelong love of sports and dedicated himself to becoming an accomplished athlete in multiple disciplines. He joined the offensive line at Avalon High School and became an All-American football player at Westminster College. Pat was inducted into Westminster's Hall of Fame in 1983. That same year, he was named to the All-Time Westminster Football Team. Pat pursued a career in teaching at Fox Chapel High School, but he never stayed off the football field. He spent 17 years as a top assistant coach under the lights of Fox Chapel's football field, and another three as the head coach. Pat was also a member of the coaching staff for the school's wrestling and track and field teams, for a combined total of over 35 years devoted to Fox Chapel Athletics. The Fox Chapel Hall of Fame welcomed Pat on June 3, 2017. Pat spent many years as a defensive line coach at Carnegie Mellon University, and frequently sported a Tartan's hat. He earned a Master's Degree in Education from Penn State and taught for more than 30 years. While teaching and coaching, Pat married Mary Cain on May 31, 1986. Together, they raised three children: Ryan, Sean, and Shannon. To say that Pat was a devoted husband and father is an understatement. He not only demonstrated love, patience, and compassion during major life events, but also in his daily routine. He always brought coffee to his wife and daughter, showed interest in his sons' activities, and supported everyone. Although raised in the city, he evolved into an avid outdoorsman. He spent hours tying flies and loved recounting his fishing trips to Canada and the Western US—especially "the bear" story. Pat was proud of his Northside roots and often reminisced about Gus & YiaYia's ice balls and Vincent's Pizza. But the promise of warmer weather led him and Mary to Seminole, FL. He surrendered to the "salt-life" and enjoyed nothing more than spending time in the pool, on a boat, walking along the beach, or at a happy hour. When not outside, Pat could be found researching DIY videos, playing card games on his computer, or watching a variety of television and movies. Much to his wife's dismay, he rarely passed up the opportunity to watch a movie from 50-70 years ago that also featured giant ants or any monster from a lagoon. Pat could fix or build anything; he worked hard his whole life and treated everyone with kindness. He went out of his way to help people and welcomed all into the home he shared with his family. Unfortunately, Pat faced serious medical issues, but they never dimmed his spirit or his respect for the medical community. Even at the end of his life, Pat's sense of humor persevered, and he comforted his family with jokes. There would never have been enough time with him, but all who loved him are thankful for the time we had. In his memory, please put your favorite drink in a red Solo cup and raise it to Pat— a man of honor and integrity, and someone who made everyone better for having known him.
