Nader
Jan 3, 1935 — Oct 16, 2019
Seminole
Lydia Barrett Nader (Smith) passed away peacefully at 84 years old on October 16, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.
Lydia is survived by her husband, Richard J. Nader of Seminole, FL, her children; Deborah Hartshorn of Shelburne, VT, Richard Nader Jr. of Tampa, FL, Catherine Merritt of Grand Canyon, AZ and Susan Hunter of Safety Harbor, FL., 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, step-sisters Abigail Kazanowski of Concord, MA and Susan McMullan of NC.
Lydia was predeceased by her parents, Alice C. and Farnham W. Smith and step-mother Susan W. Smith, of Carlisle, MA, sister Susan Huebsch of Nonquitt, MA and step-brother George Senkler of Carlisle, MA.
Lydia grew up in Concord. MA and spent her school years at Concord Academy. Although Lydia's body was affected by polio as a baby, she climbed trees, rode horses, and ice skated in her leg brace. Lydia loved gardening with her mother, Alice, and passed that love of planting to her eldest daughter.
Lydia graduated from Colby College in 1957, where she met her future husband, Richard Nader. They raised their children in Salem, NH; hosted weddings, lobster fests and giant bonfires at their next home in Seabrook Beach, NH; went boating at their next home in Clearwater Beach, FL and finally moved to Lake Seminole Square in Seminole, FL.
Lydia was busy parenting her 4 children for many years. She also was a fantastic cook, an accomplished seamstress, a competitive board game player and an avid reader. The details she remembered from the multitude of novels she read made her sought-after partner at Trivial Pursuit. Lydia sewed and knitted clothing for her children and grandchildren, to whom she passed down her skills. She could also wire the electronics, paint the rooms, hang the shelves and fix whatever was broken.
Later in life, Lydia loved to quilt and made beautiful quilts for her children, niece, grandchildren and great grandchildren for births, birthdays and college dorm rooms. She also enjoyed making small quilts ad tiny hats for the premature infants at the hospital and quilted bags to hang on walkers for the elderly. Lydia thoroughly enjoyed being a member to the Largo Cracker Quilters. She became the Membership Chairwoman and then the President of the club. Lydia enjoyed helping to organize quilt shows and showed many of her own quilts at the shows. This was a favorite hobby of Lydia and she spoke highly of the friends she had made in the Quilt Club.
Lydia valiantly fought kidney disease with her devoted and caring husband, Richard, by her side every step of the way. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Lydia will be greatly missed.
