Judy M.
Safransky
Jun 7, 1938 — May 10, 2017
Pinellas Park
78, of Pinellas Park, FL., passed peacefully after battling cancer for over a year and a half, on Wednesday morning, May 10, 2017, with family and friends around her bed at Hospice. Her formal name was Judith Susan Cynthia Isabelle McMurrer- Safansky. She did not like being called Judith as she preferred Judy or Jude.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bob, and her sons –Bob and Tim, Stephany- daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, Ashley who was the apple of her eye and her heartbeat. They communicated daily and it made Jude's day to hear Ashley on the phone. She has some special friends – Dee and Sher. She is also survived by other relatives in Ocala, Ohio, and Wisconsin. She has friends around the country who will miss her.
Judy was born on June 7, 1938 to Herbert and Ruth McMurrer in Charleston, W.VA. She had a brother, Michael, who passed away several years ago from cancer. When Judy was a senior at Charleston Catholic High School, she was elected "Miss Fighting Irish," She was proud of the title as her father had died in her junior year and this was in honor to him. When her younger brother Michael graduated from high school, her mother decided that they would move to St. Petersburg, Florida, to be with her mother's sister and her family. Judy had completed three years at Morris Harvey College in Charleston but after the move, decided to go to work full time so her brother could attend college. Her fiancé, Robert J. Safransky, returned from service and proposed that they get married on August 22, 1959. Judy agreed to that date and they got married at St Paul's Catholic Church in St. Petersburg. They went to Chicago the following week for the wedding of the man who had introduced Judy to Bob, as Bob was serving as the introducer's best man. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, until late spring of 1960 while Bob was completing the certification requirements to be a teacher. They moved to St. Petersburg in late spring but they remembered seeing a March blizzard in Wisconsin and a six months later saw a hurricane in Florida. So they saw the extremes of both states.
Judy became the mother of Robert M. (Bob) on January 16, 1962. She began motherhood with Bob's arrival and soon youngsters up and down the street knew that Mrs. S. would talk with them and sometimes feed them a snack. A neighbor's young girl had trouble saying "Judy" and so started say "Jude" or "Hey Jude." Judy is still known by friends and family as "Jude." She gave birth to a second son, Timothy H. (Tim) on November 18, 1964. She continued to be mother to the many children who lived on their street as they came to know and love her.
Out of her great concern for others' well-being, Judy became involved in the Cult Awareness Network (CAN) and eventually became president of the Tampa Bay Chapter. She became known as an excellent counselor of parents and for youths who had been involved in these
religious groups. She received an award for her outstanding services with and for the young people in these groups.
People will remember her as loving wife and mother who had a beautiful way of making people feel good. In a few words, or just with a smile, she could make the another person feel like a Million Dollars.
Judy was diagnosed with cancer in late February, 2016, and she took chemo every other week until late March of 2017 when her medicine was changed to a pill. She took the pill for a short time and became ill and entered the hospital. The doctors did everything they could for but saw that she needed to go to Hospice. She told the doctors that she did not want to go to hospice but wanted to go home. She went to Hospice and a very conscientious nurse called her husband at 2:30 in the morning to come to Hospice. He and his son did go immediately. At about 5:30 AM they called family and friends to come to the Hospice. They did. Judy passed away at 7:40 AM on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
