Joseph Luther
Pokorny
Aug 11, 1949 — Mar 23, 2026
It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Luther Pokorny, age 76, on March 23, 2026, at Suncoast Hospice Care Center Mid-Pinellas. Joe loved his family dearly. He had many friends and made new friends wherever he went. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Joe was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He lived in the Perryville, Maryland area and moved to
Seminole, Florida in 1991.
Joe worked for VA Health Care System both in Perry Point, Maryland and Bay Pines, Florida. His VA career spanned 36 years, and he held many roles, most notably as a Laundry Plant Manager. He also served in the US Army from 1969-1971. During his military service he received the National Defense Service Medal and trained as a Sharpshooter.
Joe was a proud life member of The American Legion and the Elks. Being part of these organizations was an important part of his life and social circle. Joe was pre-deceased by his parents, Richard Pokorny Sr. and Doris Pokorny.
Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Pokorny. Joe and Linda were high school sweethearts, and their love story was admired by many. He is also survived by his children; Wendy Pokorny, Melissa Hines and Tom Pokorny, son-in-law Bob Hines, daughter-in-law Rachel Eichen and grand-children Trey, Julia, and Meghan. Joe was a man of strong faith and taught us all the importance of family and doing what is right.
Joe's surviving family members include his brothers—Richard Pokorny Jr., Dennis Pokorny, and Jerry Pokorny—as well as his sisters, Barbara Langston and Carol Saunders. He loved and helped care for his siblings from an early age. They all grew up in a tight knit family,
always looking out for one another.
Joe loved playing golf, watching Nascar and any sport that happened to be on television. He was a huge fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Rays. He also enjoyed traveling, cruising, concerts, music, and sporting events.
In the weeks before his passing, he was able to share many stories and memories. He spoke of his love of God and his peace with going home to God. We know he will be watching over us and he will be forever in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mohn Funeral Home in Seminole, Florida on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, starting at 10:00am. A private interment service with immediate family will be held at a later time at Bay Pines Cemetery.
