Joan
Schulkers
Feb 8, 1943 — Sep 23, 2026
Joan Schulkers, 83, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Born on February 8, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, Joan moved to Florida in 1970, where she made her home and built a life filled with family, faith, friendship and music.
A devoted Catholic, Joan was a longtime member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, where she was an active part of the music ministry for more than 40 years. Music was one of the great joys of her life, and she shared that love with her church and community throughout the years. She sang in the choir and played the flute, piano, piccolo and hand bells. She also sang with the choral group at St. Petersburg College.
Joan also had a love for golf and treasured the friendships and memories made through the game. Whether she was making music, spending time with family, enjoying a round of golf or serving her church, Joan brought her own special warmth and joy to the people around her.
Joan was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Burkey; her mother, Edith Hazzard; her brother, Steele Burkey; and her husband, Robert Schulkers.
She is survived by her sister, Caroline Blacker; her brother, Peter Burkey; her son, Joaquin; her daughter, Jessica; her stepdaughters, Natalie, Krissy and Dianna; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Joan leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, music and love. For more than four decades, her voice and her music were part of the life of St. Jerome Catholic Church, and the impact she made on her family, friends and community will continue to be remembered. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
