Jean Elizabeth
Burke
Jan 31, 1937 — Nov 26, 2025
Seminole
Jean (Ahtila) Burke of Seminole, FL, went home to the Lord on November 26th , 2025, surrounded and loved in her final days by the family she adored. Born on January 31st , 1937 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, she was the youngest of six children born to Martha and John Ahtila. As the daughter of Finnish immigrants, Jean grew up in Newberry, Michigan in the loving home her father built. Jean had a heart of gold and gentle nature, but was also raised in the Finnish spirit of sisu, which helped shape the resilience, determination, and inner fortitude she carried with her throughout life.
While attending secretarial school in Rochester, New York, Jean met and married George Burke. By far her greatest joy and accomplishment in life was raising their three children, Pat, Mike, and Linda. The young family relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida, where Jean made a loving family home by the warm gulf waters she so loved. She loved animals, and once her young family was settled, she made the executive decision to answer a newspaper ad and bring home a puppy which became the family's 15 year beloved pet, Buffy. She juggled being a fulltime mom with working part time from home for the family accounting business while her kids were in school. She was an avid reader, loved boating, walking, and enjoyed summer family travels with her children to the lakes and deep woods of her youth in the UP of Michigan.
When life brought a new and unexpected chapter, Jean embarked on a twenty-year career with Pinellas County Traffic Court. No matter what life presented, Jean faced it with composure, grace, and courage, and was ever the loving mother, with family always the priority. In her later years, Jean enjoyed traveling, walking, spending time with friends, and most of all spending much of her time doting on her six grandchildren, Jennifer and Kelly (Pat), Max and Luke (Linda), and Zach and Matt (Mike), all of whom adored their sweet grandma.
Throughout her life, Jean was a truly rare and remarkable woman, in that her soft presence, gentle demeanor, loving heart and quiet acceptance of others did the talking as to who she was, and made her the fan favorite wherever she ventured. She is profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her, but left the most amazing legacy by her example of journeying through life while always keeping the arrow on the compass rose trained on what matters most.
Jean is survived by her daughters Pat Stich (Mark) and Linda Mueller, son Mike Burke (Cathy), six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by George Burke, son-in-law Jim Mueller, brothers Art, Reino, Carl, and Earl, sister Wilma, and parents Martha and John Ahtila.
The family will hold a private celebration of life.
Donations in honor of Jean may be made to Suncoast Hospice.
