Dennis James
Mcbride
Mar 31, 1939 — Jan 12, 2024
St. Petersburg
Dennis was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 31, 1939. He graduated from Farmington High School where he sang tenor in the glee club and was captain of the football team. In his senior year, he had the most tackles in the county. Dennis came to Florida from Michigan in 1961 after
serving in the U.S. Army Caribbean Command. In May of 1962, he began a thirty-eight-year career with Honeywell Space Systems in Clearwater. He started as a Junior Technical Illustrator and then held other senior administrative positions until he was promoted to Manager of Presentation Development. Over the years, he wrote and illustrated many articles about visual communications as well as publishing three "How To" art books. He has been listed in "Who's Who in Corporate Communications" a feature of Audio-Visual Communications magazine.
After his retirement, he taught drawing and painting at the Gulf Coast Art Center, the Largo and Seminole Recreation Centers, as well as private lessons to children and adults. Many of his pieces hang in private collections. He had exhibitions at The Gulf Coast Museum of Art, as well as both the Largo and Seminole libraries. A collection of his ink renderings hangs at both the Seminole and Largo Historical Societies museums. He illustrated calendars for both the Seminole Historical Society and the City of Pinellas Park. He contributed much of his artistic talent to the development of the Seminole Historical Society Museum. He was a member of the choir at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for over fifty years.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betsy, and his three children: Scott (Mandy), Amy Franklin (Russ), Todd (Teresa) and grandchildren Caitlin, Molly, Anna, Matthew, Pippa and Aidan. He is also survived by sister Linda Lockridge and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Audrey and Jim McBride.
Dennis was loved by all who knew him. He was the first one on the dance floor, he was the voice of Christmas Eve. He had the best Dad jokes (aka Dennisisms), an endless baseball hat collection, and was always up for a slice of cake. He loved to watch the Tampa Bay Rays, Buccaneers, and FSU football with his family and win or lose, never lost faith that they were going to win the next one. He was a beautiful example of a gentleman, friend, son, brother, father, and husband.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 11:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 11565 66th Avenue North in Seminole, Florida. The Mass will be "live-streamed" on You-Tube, Facebook, and the Church website.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seminole Historical Society, P.O. Box 7652, Seminole, Florida 33775.
